This movie reminded me a lot of Wristcutters, just a lot less weird and with a far better cast. It’s also one of the best indie romances involving road trips that I’ve ever seen, and there seems to be a lot of them. It must be a widely held dream among indie filmmakers to drive around the country meeting quirky people and falling in love with odd and slightly crazy girls. It’s an admirable goal to be sure, I can see why they would strive for it, but it does sort of get repetitive. It’s a good thing this one is good. I remember watching the trailer and being pretty excited for this movie, mostly because of Pucci being punched (I don’t hate the guy, it was just funny to watch) and it has Zooey Deshanel who I really enjoy watching.
Zooey was definetly the highlight of the film, though that is most likely personal preference since as far as great acting, Pucci was the most surpisingly good actor of the bunch. He really carried this film, and while at times I didn’t like how he did the emotional scenes, he was very interesting to watch. Jena Malone is talented as always, but I did not like her character at all, and I can’t help bu wonder if it would have been better with a different actress. I was glad that she wasn’t one of the leads (contrary to what the cover – and the first half of the film – would have you believe).
The writing was interesting, and there were a lot of very cool and very emotianlly inspiring scenes, but it also felt sort of amatuerish. The writer seemed to be just stringing together different scenes and characters without much thought as to how it would actually be in real life. My main complaint with the film is that none of the characters or situations felt real. There were no fantastical elements in the film so it should have been fairly realistic – and it was – but the characters just never acted like real people would, which was odd to watch.
I really liked the soundtrack, which is something that I always seem to enjoy in these sorts of indie films. It was never overpowering and it just seemed to fit. Same goes for the cinematography which was never distracting but always relevant to the scene. each section of the film had a specific mood and style and they were always just right. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes indie road trip/ romantic/ drama/ comedy type films. It’s hard to describe the movie without seeming either too verbose or just not correct, but it’s a good film, so check it out.
