This review contains minor spoilers.
I had pretty high hopes for this film when I went into the theater. I’ve liked all of Jason Segel’s work as far back as “Freaks and Geeks”, I am a huge fan of Kristen Bell and after seeing “St. Trinian’s” I was looking forward to seeing Russel Brand again. Of course Mila Kunis is also in it and she is pretty good looking which is always a plus. The trailers also made it look hilarious and I enjoyed the marketing; between the simple posters and Jason Segel’s character blog. And I am glad to say that I was not disappointed.
It’s hard not to compare this with the rest of the Judd Apatow helmed comedies of late so that’s exactly what I did as soon as I exited the theater. I enjoyed this more than both Knocked Up and 40 year old virgin, and while I may not have laughed quite as hard or as much as the first time I saw Superbad I think I might have enjoyed this more than that as well.
Of course, as with any Apatow film, this movie was brimming with sex jokes, nudity, and profanity. Though of them all I think this one had the best balance without feeling like it went overboard, which is saying a lot considering you see Jason Segel fully nude at least 3 times over the course of the film. Sure I was surprised by this but it was funny and most definetly awkward which seems to be the new comedy style lately.
The first thing I noticed about this film was that a fair amount of the jokes and shots from the trailer are not in the movie and while for the most part I didn’t mind, some scenes just didn’t feel as funny as they were in the trailer. They didn’t really add anything more to the film and I can see why they would be cut but I still enjoyed them, and at least they will show up on the DVD.
I thought the plot and writing was good, Segel’s Muppet Dracular Rock Opera was both hilarious and surprisingly good all of the supporting characters were interesting and funny, though not as interesting as the leads which is good. I don’t know if it was due to the writing or not but there were times during the film where I actually wanted Segel and Bell to get back together. It didn’t last long of course but I admit it happened and it is definetly not something I normally see in romantic comedies. Usually the original girl is very unlikable and only acts mean or badly but it wasn’t so clean cut here which I liked since it is a lot more like real life.
I really enjoyed this movie, it was hilarious, the casting was amazing and I was really drawn in to the world. I don’t often do this but I would recommend this movie to almost anybody. And on a side note, with a high rating and the content of this movie I was really surprised to see the amount of young people in the theater.
